Products to be withdrawn from the market containing rotenone

Council Directive 91/414/EEC establishes a framework for the authorisation of plant protection products in the EC. A key element of this is the review of all existing active substances (defined as those on the market in 1993).

In October 2007, the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health voted for the non-inclusion of rotenone in Annex I of Directive 91/414/EEC. This is because the sole notifiers for rotenone informed the Commission that they no longer wished to participate in the programme of work and it was, therefore, not possible to conclude that rotenone met the safety criteria for inclusion in Annex I to Directive 91/414/EEC on the basis of the information available.

The EC Decision will be published up to 6 months after the vote at the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health (about March 2008).

The UK has 3 professional products and 5 amateur products containing rotenone that will need to be withdrawn from the market to comply with the EC Decision.

Approval for advertisement, sale and supply by any person will be revoked / withdrawn 6 months after publication of the Decision (about September 2008).

Approval will be given for a further 12 months (until about September 2009) for the storage and use.
